Maastricht Carnival review
We didn’t actually go to the German parade on Sunday. My German co-workers will be stunned.
The friends we were going with heard the carnival was better in the Maastricht, which happens to be about 20 minutes from where we are in Germany, so we decided to go there instead. We missed the actual parade but we made it to the hotel, changed, then got to the downtown area just at it was getting dark. It was better than the German carnival – everyone, I mean everyone, was dressed up. Around each corner was a band (usually next to a pub), mostly brass and drums and singers, people from the parade I would guess, and the costumes were really amazing.
It’s too bad it was dark when we got there – that made for alot of bad blurry photos. Anyway, here’s a couple that turned out okay.
Dan, me, Gerry, Dan and Francois just arriving:
Yes, they are supposed to be fire hydrants. To Francois’s dismay, it was only other guys who played around with his water nozzle throughout the night.
Some of the costume finery:
A man with a parrot, an ostrich and his afro (not sure the theme here):
Partaking Dutch beer in the streets:
