All I know is that when I walk, it almost feels like my heels aren’t going to catch the ground.
I did some deadlifts on Monday, and some lying leg curls, and today I can’t walk properly. That’s probably a good thing. I need to do some stretching tonight.
I found an interesting bit of information about hamstrings according to exrx.net:
Hamstring inflexibility is common in modern society. This may be explained by the principles of detraining (aka “use it or lose it”). Except in some cultures, we rarely keep the hamstring limber by sitting on the ground, bending over regularly, etc. as our ancestors had. It is only relatively recently, as far as evolutionary time is concerned, we stopped performing manual labor and began regularly sitting in chairs for prolonged periods of time.
I do find myself sitting on the floor here and there, but hmm… Yeah, it’s been a while since I hunted and gathered in the forest.
One other thing, I read in my favorite work-out book, that when doing Lying Leg curls, there are two variations. Pointing your toes during the motion will emphasis the hamstring, while bending your ankle will put some emphasis on the calf. Try it out, you will feel a big difference (or at least I did!)
There are lot o’ holidays in May. Mostly religious, and mostly Catholic in this area around the Rhein. I’ll have to post later on about what holidays are what. I know Americans are generally heathens, but geez, I didn’t know that I didn’t know about so many holy days following Easter.
Last year, our first working month was May, and our jaws were a-dropping because it felt like every week there was at least one day off.
Nice you say? Yeah, if you have vacations planned, which we do in two weeks. I can’t wait! 🙂
As for this week, I just found out that Thursday and Friday we have off. So umm yeah, 3 day week this week. Is it bad I am just thinking I have two less days to work on my deadlines?
I’m not sure if it’s just a random occurrence or actual benefit from going to the gym regularly but I am feeling full of energy today. The sunshine and the warmth of almost May weather contribute to some degree too.

Me: “It’s cold in here. ”
D: “I turned off the heat.”
Me: “Ohh… okay then.”
The heater is off, but the sun has come out finally, this weekend particularly. It’s glorious. Coming from Florida I take the sun for granted. Here, I appreciate the warm sunny afternoon alot more. The weather today is very similar weather to when D and I arrived here a year ago. Geez, it’s been a whole year.
We took the train to Aachen last night for our co-worker’s birthday party at his place. It was warm enough to sit on their patio, the first time this year they got to use it, and it was quite nice. Met a few people I knew from before and more of his family since they are all from this area.
Tried a German drink for the first time called Bionade, I guess it has become popular throughout Europe and getting popular in the U.S. It’s a lightly fruit flavored drink, what makes it special is that it is created in a method that is similar to beer, with malt. The creator isolated a strain of bacteria capable of converting the sugar that normally becomes alcohol into nonalcoholic gluconic acid, which he used to ferment the new drink. Anyway, it’s nice. I don’t like sodas, but this would be a good mixer or just alone like we had it last night.
So it’s Friday of week 1 of my new fitness plan. So far I’ve posted what I’ve eaten each day and it’s not overly impressive. We usually don’t eat out as much as we have this week, but I’ve still been a little hungry in the afternoons. Working out, especially with weights, really increases my appetite. I do like having sore muscles though, feels like maybe I’m making some progress.
So, the question, is it better to work out in the morning or in the evening? It does feel pretty great to head to work with a workout already accomplished. After work can be a good way to relax from your day, as long as you are not too hungry. Sometimes I get too hungry after work to want to work out before I go home.
I’d like to be in a bit better shape and to “cut out the crap” I’ve been eating here and there. I’ve decided to create a little journal for this, and why not include it as a page on my blog. So my formal (informal) fitness diary will contain this info:
- Weight deviation – from my starting point
- Food – eaten throughout the day
- Exercise – done for a given day
I’m not going to publish my weight directly (I guess I like a little bit of privacy!). Instead I will use deviation from my weight as of yesterday to start. And as to not mentally disturb anyone who isn’t being healthy-conscious at the moment, I’ve decided for now, to publish my journal on a separate page, aptly called Fitness Self-Challenge.
on our HP Media Vault. We seem to be close on space on both our laptops and the vault, which we use for back-ups (and everything else) was full too. We bought an additional 320 GB drive for the expansion slot. Basically doubles the vault capacity. Now we have lot o’ room for our stuff so we don’t have to think about what we want to delete (yay).
Anyway, anyone who is thinking about getting one, or something similar, I would definitely recommend it, the interface is easy to use, and convenient; we are able to use it on a wireless network with no problems.
