I guess you know the vacation is over when you are sitting at home thinking about your next vacation, with no clean socks and eating yogurt with a questionable expiration date.
Domestic matters reign today I suppose. Sigh. 🙂
So we arrived home yesterday from our petit vacances in Eastern Europe. Pretty awesome tour. I’ll probably do city by city posts later on (when I have my photos in some semblance of organization), but for now, a few random impressions:
- Loved Berlin, it was beautiful and full of (recent) history.
- World War II, followed by 40 years Communism for Poland, Hungary, and the areas now the countries of Czech Republic and Slovakia was a pretty raw deal.
- Auschwitz was more terrible to visit than I had imagined, but at the same time one of the best stops on the trip. Everyone should go there at least once.
- Poland has beautiful countryside and beautiful cities also (pictures will be coming soon).
- Vienna was really gorgeous but the people looked normal to me. (I had read that Vienna was full of well-dressed snobs). Maybe I didn’t find the affluent area of the city when we visited. 😉
Aww… it is a nice feeling – that first day of a some time off. Open and full of opportunity.
Yesterday was hairy. D came back from a mini business trip where he worked like he usually does (ALOT). So he was tired and catching some type of food or virus ickiness, meanwhile he had basically had one day back at work to finish all the loose ends at the office here. And I was trying to finish my loose ends for the time I’m gone while not being worried that he would be too sick today to get on the airplane. Not the best day. We left work at 4ish and D slept for pretty much the rest of the day. This morning he seems ok. Thankfully!
I thought about eating the last two eggs in the refrigerator this morning before we leave, but utimately went with oatmeal. I love vacation but I really hate eating out all the time. After about 4 days I start to feel like one of those ducks they stuff to make fois gras. I will try to eat light where I can, but it’s hard, especially when I know there will be dishes I’ve never heard of before. That’s the fun part!
I think we’re going to be walking alot so that should help. No computer while we’re gone so I’m thinking I’ll bring a notepad. Not sure I will need to write but just in case. Will definitely be working out the camera the next two weeks.
So, as I probably won’t write here until we’re back, I hope everyone has a good couple of weeks!
I bought sandals today. Yes, it was warm enough to wear my new sandals, which I did while I was trying to find an open pharmacy (at 7 p.m.) German sidewalks roll up earlier than any small town USA. Yes, I had to leave work “early” so I could go buy sandals for my vacation. Aww well, at least they are cute.
So we’re taking two weeks off, and we are going to play like we are N. American tourists… which we are, but we’re doing the tour that people get on planes across the Atlantic to do – the 6 countries in 12 days styled tour. No self-respecting European would try to see this many places in this amount of time (and it’s unheard of to go on vacations of less than 3 weeks here anyway). So yeah, I’m packing my jeans and my Nikes too. The horrors.
So this is the rough itinerary, (graphically because pictures are more fun!):
