and a party at the zoo.
This was actually a month ago now since she’s just turned 13 months old, but we’ve been moving and cleaning and busy and now sick, and so on. Turning 1 IS a big deal, and we had fun throwing her a party.
The table and some decorations, with a view of the lake:
Chocolate and vanilla cupcakes (I made) and pieces of German style birthday “kuchen” – donauwelle (chocolate), apple cake, cherry pie, plum cake, cheesecake, raspberry-currant cake:
A small area we set up so the children could play inside:
Just outside, with lots of birds and ducks to feed:
The lucky girl got lots of presents, though she isn’t really interested in unwrapping yet. (she still loves all her gifts) :
A few of her presents were more for me:
This toy has an English and Deutsch mode:
I really loved the idea of a party at the zoo and it turned out that, in actual execution, it went well (if I do say so myself). The zoo staff was really helpful and the room was clean and the perfect size. I think everyone had fun, whew!
A few more photos, just because. Here is Baby A at the old apartment with flowers from the party. D says this shirt looks makes her look like she’s at a Renaissance festival.. :
Outside with her 1st year birthday present from mama and papa:
My mother visited with us last month. (Of course) we enjoyed it. It was her first trip across the Atlantic and she was excited to see everything, including her first grandbaby. We picked her up in Frankfurt and then spent the week at home and visiting the local sights. We did the Cologne cathedral, shopping in Aachen, visited the castle here, and drove to The Netherlands to walk around Maastricht.
My birthday fell in the same week she came to visit, on purpose! and it was definitely a day I will remember. After a cold afternoon visiting the cathedral in Cologne (and the souvenir shop where my mother had a field day), we arrived back home to have some small birthday celebrations. D and baby A came down the stairs after dinner with what appeared to be my gift, a diaper pail with a red bow on top. Wrapped in a few unused diapers was this:
D downplaying our need for one was all part of the master plan! I love it! I also got a few nice gifts from my sisters, which were sent along via mom.
After my mother left we got into a good little routine: gymnastics class, baby massage, swim class each week which was good until baby A got her first infection, which was still on-going this week. We had 2+ years of just about zero doctor appointments and now it feels like I’m going to one once a week. Maybe next week the routine can begin again.
Our Valentine’s Day was cozy. We went to the gym. There were flowers (the photos are still on the camera). It snowed. We enjoyed a special dinner/movie night at home after the baby was in bed.
A joint effort was put forth to finish a school project my cousin’s daughter sent us. We took “Flat Stanley” around a few places and wrote about his adventure in Germany.
Our beauty is in her 5th month now. She is working on crawling, and every time I look down at her on her play-mat, she is in a different position/location. Just this week we are able to feel her two bottom teeth have pushed through her gums – they should be visible any day now!
If you are ever in Stolberg, Germany, a meal at Artemis would be recommended. It has a nice atmosphere and since Dan and I were in Athens last summer, we can verify, it does feel like Greece inside – if you factor in an allowance for German instead of Greek for the background noise. The waiter picked us a fantastic Greek red wine that I doubt we’ll be able to find on our own for at home, but we’ll probably look next time anyway. Went great with the lamb we ordered. Good atmosphere, great food, awesome company – Birthdays are fun.
I got this last night too:
It’s hard to tell from the photo but there are two chains, one solid and one beaded. Pretty no?
It’s my birthday week so I get a little princess treatment.
Dan and I are going to dinner
tomorrow Saturday night. We picked a Greek restaurant we really liked last time we went.
Here’s me in Quebec over break, receiving a birthday present early – a bright Italian leather cosmetics bag from Dan’s parents. I love it.
